Junk Art Journal Page with Soft Pastels and Collage Fodder

Hi there, Susanne here with a spread in my handmade junk art journal using collage, soft pastels, stamps and mark making. I’m decorating the pages with collage fodder made with our new Sketchy Leaves 4 stencil. Scroll down for a full video tutorial.

I started the background of this page with different collage papers such as gelli prints and scrapbooking paper. I adhered the torn pieces with a glue stick and covered the whole spread with a layer of clear gesso and let it dry. I am using soft pastels together with water to bring in colour. If you don’t have soft pastels you can use any other transparent medium, such as water-soluble pencils, Brushos, watercolors or acrylic inks. Once this was dry, I sprayed some fixative onto my background and then added a little bit of background stamping with images from Mixed Media Marks 1 and the bold leaf from Pencil Marks 7. To bring in more vibrancy I sprinkled acrylic ink in white and turquoise. I made some crayon marks with Neocolor II, too.

To make the botanical elements with the Sketchy Leaves 4 stencil I sprayed water through the stencil onto some mix media paper, removed it immediately and sprinkled the Brushos carefully onto it. You don’t need much powder for this technique and you might have to experiment with the amount of water you use. I have a video at the bottom of the post with a little demo for you!

My sentiment is stamped to some old college paper. It’s from our Mixed Sentiment 1 stamps.

Here is a full video tutorial on how I made this spread:

I hope I could inspire you a little bit, thanks for stopping by today!

xx Susanne
