Mixed Media Art Journal Tutorial for Beginners with Collage and Pencil Marks 7

Hi there, Susanne here with a beginner friendly art journaling tutorial using collage, Distress Crayons and stamps from our new Pencil Marks 7 stamp set. I am building an easy background with neutral paper scraps from old books, stationery supplies and some left over paint paper. If you don’t have Distress Crayons you can substitute them perfectly with any kind of water-soluble crayon. Scroll down for a full video tutorial.
I started the background by adhering the paper pieces with a gluestick randomly to my page. I then cut a big circle from a greenish left over paint paper and adhered it to the center. I covered everything with a layer of clear gesso.
After the gesso was dry I added colour with Distress Crayons (Cracked Pistachio, Abandoned Coral, Crushed Olive and Picked Raspberry). To make the center-circle pop I framed it with the Black Soot Distress Crayon. I am blending the crayons with a little amount of water and my fingers. I’m explaining this technique in my video! I add more texture to the background with some stamping and splatters.

For my focal image I picked the flowers from Pencil Marks 7, stamped them to mix media paper and coloured them in with Tombow brush pens. You can use any kind of colouring medium to do that. I cut the flowers out and arranged them to the circle together with some leaves that I’ve stamped directly onto the page.

I messed up the sentiment that I wanted to stamp bended to the inside of the circle, so I covered this with some scribbly words made with a black watercolour pencil. The splatters are all done with acrylic inks. As an alternative you can use acrylic paint or gesso and thin it down with water for white splatters. For the black splatters you can use the water-soluble crayon, scribble it to a palette or craft mat and mix this with water.

I hope I could inspire you a little bit, thanks for stopping by today!
xx Susanne
