Abstract Collage with transparent Layers and Pencil Marks 4

Hi everybody! Susanne here and I’m sharing an abstract mixed media art journal tutorial today and dive into mark making and transparent layering. I am using a flower from our Pencil Marks 4 stamp set as my focal point and handmade collage paper for the background. Scroll down for a full video tutorial.

Layers with texture and colours create depth in your abstract work. It makes your pieces interesting and the process is so enjoyable. For my spread I am using handmade collage papers, acrylic inks, paint pens, a pencil, Neocolors and a few stamps.

I started the background by adhering a the collage papers with a glue stick. I covered everything with a layer of clear gesso to protect the collage and also to prime the paper in my journal. I am using a very cheap sketchbook from Action.
After the gesso was dry I did some mark making with the numbers stamp from Mix It Up 1, a Neocolor I in Salmon and a usual pencil. I then added colour with acrylic inks in Burnt Sienna and Phtalo Turquoise. Once the inks were dry I added a dot pattern with a white and light coral posca paint pen. I also made some marks with a turquoise Neocolor II.

The sentiment is build from words with our Mix A Sentiment stamp set. It’s stamped with white embossing powder to black cardstock. The flower from Pencil Marks 4 is embossed in black to white cardstock.
