Abstract Watercolor & Mixed Media – Art Journal Page Tutorial

Hi there, Susanne here sharing an abstract watercolor art journal spread with mixed media mark making and stamps from our Mix It Up 4, Mix It Up 6 and Collage Leaves 3 sets.

I love playing with watercolors in a loose and abstract way. Today I even limited my palette to just four colours! When I reduce the amount of colours I am using, I take care, that I pick colours with a good mix in tonal value. That means I pick a light, a mid tone and a darker colour. That guarantees me a big tonal range, which makes a painting more interesting.

After I’ve layed down the watercolors I did mark makings with coloured pencils, Neocolors, acrylic markers and some background stamps. My focal point is a leaf image from our Collage Leaves 3 set. I used it as a guide and drew over it with acrylic markers.
