Art Journal page with Color-stacked gel prints using Stencils

Hey there! Isa in the house, and today I’m excited to dive with you into one of my absolute favorite stencil techniques on the gel plate – Color-Stacked Gel Prints! I’ll be using the Big Ovals and Big Circles stencils. Circular shapes always steal the show in my art, so let’s get started!

First things first, I put down three analogous colors on my A4 gel plate. Then, I layered both the Big Ovals and Big Circles stencils before pulling that first print, with white areas strategically left out.

With the stencils still on the plate, I grabbed my brayer and rolled three analogous colors, complementing the first palette. Stencils off, pull the second print, and voilà – a beautiful print where the pattern shines in a new color, and the negative space rocks the original palette.

Now, to add a twist! To reuse that very first print with the white areas, I repeat the initial step – a print with the stencils in the same position, but this time with a contrasting color palette. Stencils off, grab the very first print, align it with the pattern on the plate, and pull – another beautiful color-stacked print!

And guess what? You can keep this gel printing fiesta going. Stack those prints, align, pull, and repeat. Of course, a dash of off-sized is welcome – it adds that extra artistic flair.

Feeling a bit overwhelmed? Check out the video at the end of this blog, it’ll clear any confusion.

Now, let’s jazz up an art journal page! I’m using these beauties as a background, adding smaller painted paper scraps, including a number from the Pick a Number stamp set. My focal point is a leafy stamped and embossed image, cut out from the Pencil Marks #3 stamp set. And because no journal page is complete without words, I’ve sprinkled sentiments from the Mix a Sentiment stamp set – printed on a white cardboard, cut, and glued down.

Hope you caught the creative bug from this tutorial!
