Art Journal Spread Tutorial using Sketchy Birds 1

Lindsey (doodlings_cards) with a mixed media tutorial for you! Did you see my art journal page from a couple of weeks ago with the lovely Sketchy Birds 1 and a Gelli print background?

Here’s the step-by-step tutorial.

I used my Windsor & Newton Cotman watercolours to colour 1 of the images from the Sketchy Birds 1 set.

Once dry, I added some shading with a graphite pencil, and some highlights with a white Posca pen.

For the background, I used a Gelli print from my stash, which I had printed with images from the Carved Collection 5 set.

Then I added some more texture with heat embossed images from the Mixed Media Marks 1 set.

I have a pile of “marks” images stamped in black Versamark onto tissue paper; I love these for adding extra interest to a background 😊

Focal image and background sorted, I gathered co-ordinating thread and sequins for embellishments and did machine stitching around the edge of the piece. I added some white thread behind the bird to tie in with the white embossed marks.
