Art Journal Page & Emboss Stamping Resist Technique

Hey there! Isa here, sharing a mixed media technique that’s bound to elevate your projects. Today, I’m diving into a resist technique that uses embossing stamps from the Pencil Marks 3 and Mix it Up 2 sets. Get ready for a journey of dimension!

To kick things off, I opted for a whole book page as my substrate, stamped with a design from the Pencil Marks 3 set using a Versamark watermark stamp pad. The magic happens with the application of black embossing powder and the heat gun. Instantly, the stamped image rises, creating a resist effect.

Now, onto the acrylics! I chose an analogous color palette, adding ample water to the acrylic paint to transform the book page into a watercolor-like painting. I made sure to get a variety of values, to add life into the embossed pattern.

Round two introduces the grid stamp from the Mix it Up 2 set. Using ivory embossing powder this time, I repeated the process with a complementary color palette over the embossed grid.

Transitioning to my art journal, I created a background of neutral tones – Payne’s Grey and Ochre Yellow – adding a touch of white splatter. I carefully glued down pieces of the embossed and painted papers, creating a textured foundation for what comes next.

For the focal point, I turned to the Collage Leaves 1 set, introducing three contrasting stamped images from a previous blog post. Unfortunately the Collage Leaves 1 are not available anymore, but you might like the Collage Leaves 2 or our Sketchy Leaves instead.

These pieces create visual interest and depth  into the textured background.

But what’s a journal page without a sentiment? I glued one down from the Journal Words set, that I had stamped on sturdy black cardboard, and embossed with white powder. I then and added playful marks using my Neocolor II crayons. Feeling a need for a bit more drama, I heightened the contrast in one corner, ensuring every inch of the composition sparked curiosity.

And there you have it! I hope this encourages you to explore the wonders of emboss stamping as a resist for your painted papers!

Be Bold and Shine,

Isa
