Journal Cover with Sketchy Birds 2 & Pencil Marks 2

Hello arty friends,

I was having a look around for a project idea and came across a boring old notebook, so I decided to jazz it up a bit by decorating the cover using the Sketchy Birds 2 and Pencil Marks 2 stamps sets.

I roughly covered it with Gesso as I didn’t like the original colour, and also to make sure the surface would stand up to anything else I might use. I looked at my colour wheel for a (triadic) colour combination to take me out of my comfort zone a little bit.

I added some stencilling using a honeycomb stencil and ochre acrylic paint.

Next I tore up some old letters and book pages and glued some of these elements on to the page. As you can see, I like to start in one corner and work out from there. To tie everything together I added some stamping using colours from my chosen combination.

I created a background using purple Distress Oxides and gold paint for some splatter. Once this was dry I stamped some of the birds from the Sketchy Birds 2 set and cut them out. I also stamped the leaves from the Pencil Marks 2 set onto some green scraps of paper and cut them out.

I assembled my stamped elements on the cover, glued them down and added some little punched flowers.

I also added some white mark making and a stamped quote.
